7 Discriminatory (or Deadly) Countries for LGBT People

A quick glance at Wikipedia or this ILGA report is enough to tell you that there are a LOT of countries where it’s dangerous or deadly to be (or even to be perceived as) lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).

There are still more than 80 countries with sodomy laws, and punishment can include flogging, imprisonment, and in about a dozen jurisdictions, the death penalty. Those suspected of being LGBT are also routinely the victims of harassment, discrimination and violence. Many of those who speak up for LGBT rights – regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity – are themselves persecuted with impunity.

Here are 7 countries Amnesty International has recently had particular concerns about:

NIGERIA: On November 29th, Nigeria’s senate passed a bill that would place people at risk of criminal sanctions, including human rights defenders and anyone – friends, families and colleagues – who stands up for the rights of LGBT people in Nigeria. Individuals could face imprisonment based on nothing more than their actual or assumed sexual orientation or gender identity, or stemming from allegations about their relationship status or consensual sexual conduct.

Jean-Claude Roger MbedeCAMEROON: In Cameroon, homosexuality is criminalized under Section 347a of the Cameroonian Penal Code.  Jean-Claude Roger Mbede was sentenced to 3 years in prison on charges of “homosexuality” and is currently serving his sentence in a prison where he is at risk of homophobic attacks, as well as ill-treatment by fellow inmates or prison authorities. In addition, the prison conditions are harsh, with inmates suffering overcrowding, poor sanitation and inadequate food. You can take action on his case and others by signing up to Write for Rights this December 3-11.

uganda lgbt protest new yorkUGANDA: The parliament in Uganda recently reintroduced the Anti-Homosexuality Bill which if enacted would be one of the most severe violations of LGBT human rights. The bill proposes a 3-year sentence for anyone failing to report homosexuals; a life sentence for anyone participating in “homosexual activity;” and the death sentence for “aggravated homosexuality.” The bill also imposes a 7-year sentence for providing assistance or protection to LGBT individuals, making the work of human rights activists and public health professionals extremely dangerous.

Russia LGBT marchRUSSIA: Russia recently debated a draconian anti-gay bill which effectively bans public events by LGBT people and organizations under the pretext of protecting minors. If enacted, the law would allow authorities to impose fines of up to the equivalent of US$1,600 for “public actions aimed at propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality, and transgenderism among minors.” Under the measure, freedom of assembly and expression for LGBT groups would be prohibited anywhere children might be present. This would rule out nearly all public events carried out by or on behalf of LGBT people and organizations.

HONDURAS: Although same-sex sexual activity is not technically illegal in Honduras, Amnesty International is concerned about the environment faced by activists and other members of the LGBT community there. Attacks are rarely investigated thoroughly, and there is not enough protection for those who come forward to report these crimes. This year, one LGBT activist and human rights defender, Alexander David Sánchez Álvarez, was threatened at gunpoint at least three times. In another case, in December 2009, the LGBT human rights activist Walter Trochez was murdered in Tegucigalpa. Additionally, its 2010 report on Honduras, Amnesty International highlighted the sharp rise in the number of killings of transgender women following the June 2009 coup.

Jose Maldonado lgbt activist mexicoMEXICO: Mexico may be in the news a lot more for drug-related violence, but that certainly doesn’t mean that LGBT people are safe. Last December, police officers in the southern Mexican city of Mérida detained and tortured lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights activist José Ricardo Maldonado Arroyo in an attempt to extract information from him. They arbitrarily arrested him for around four hours and threatened him with reprisals if he spoke about the incident.

SAUDI ARABIA: Saudi Arabia has sentenced people convicted of homosexuality and “sodomy” to a range of penalties including corporal punishment and even the death penalty.  In November 2010, a 27-year-old Saudi Arabian man was sentenced to 500 lashes and five years’ imprisonment for the criminal offense of homosexuality, among other charges, and was reported in the press to have been convicted of the additional offenses of imitating women and possessing pornographic videos. He was already serving one year’s imprisonment after being convicted earlier that year on a separate charge of homosexuality, among other offenses. Flogging, a severe violation of human rights, is mandatory in Saudi Arabia for a number of offenses and can also be used at the discretion of judges as an alternative or in addition to other punishments.

  1. It is an immoral act and should be punished by death. Even animals do not practice this disgusting and devilish act.

    • Do you mean an immoral act such as discrimination and hatred? Yes, I agree with you. You should be put to death.

  2. I thought Amnesty International was an organization that helped everyone, but I didn't know letting men "dog" each other and women doing whatever they do together was part of that. I am seriously disappointed, just because it has become acceptable on TV shows, doesn't mean it's right. What's next? Promoting incest? I can give money to support causes like the drought in Somalia that caused a famine; I've managed to feed over 1500 families so far. Natural disasters, prisoners who did nothing wrong, oppressive governments who stop free press, that is all fine by me. But promoting gays, who scientists recently confirmed as the root of HIVs and many sexually transmitted diseases? Very disappointing.

  3. We must all stand up for equal rights everywhere. Human beings must be free to love who and how they choose. No goverment has the right to tell us how to feel or how to love. We are not equal until we are all equal.

  4. To the ignorami above –

    1. Homosexuality IS present in every species.
    2. Scientists did not "recently confirm" that the gays were at the root of HIV. It is thought that drinking water that had been contaminated by primate faeces is at the root of HIV.

Perhaps you should ask yourself why you feel the need to demonise homosexuality? What is it about it that REALLY scares you?

Anyway, thanks again to Amnesty for a great report.

  6. Scratch an anti gay bigot and you usually find a repressed self hating and sexually confused person inside…

1500 known species that have homosexual behaviour occurring within them…and counting.

! known species that has nutty religious based bigotry within it…

    Which is the more unnatural?

  8. Thanks Amnesty for all the great work you are achieving! I’m ashamed as a human to be of the same species as people like Chad Larish, Sam Daniel and Mary who’s been commenting above…

  9. I find it quite funny how some people hide behind computers (AKA Mary, Chad & Sam, above posts) to put their point across. I bet you wouldn't say this out in public, or to directly to my face or to any other gay person. I'm utterly ashamed as Joakim said to be part of the same species as people like this.

  10. Homosexuality has been a part of life on earth since the dinosaurs. Countless species, races, colours, genders & lifestyle choices prove that sexual preference should be unbiased & accepted. It was only when differing religions came into the mix, that male-female sexual preferences became the only acceptable tolerance. I don't believe in Adam & Eve. I don't care. The only thing that matters is personal happiness, personal fulfillment & personal acceptance. Human nature is natural, no-one is born the same and the sooner the world accepts individuality & personal choice, the better off we will all be.

  16. Why all the hate? It seems people who stay up all night should get some sleep and reconsider why they need to feel better by condemning and judging everyone within a stone's throw… seriously. That's evil in your veins when you hate someone so much you seethe. Lets see, what do these places have in common with our great land? Starvation, disease, imprisonment, torture, sexism, unemployment, and war, sounds like hell to me. Why not book these all night lovely's a ticket. Get real, no one wants this and those who want it for others are sick! You really should think about using God's word and name to justify your sickness and why you feel so cowardly that you would even dare think to do so in the first place.

  21. Wait just a gosh darn minute.
Everyone knows that the worst country on earth is none of the above, but in fact Israel.

After all just a week ago in the most important newspaper in the English speaking world, The New York Times, a major editorial was published attacking Israel.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/23/opinion/pinkwas

Well in and of itself this is no big surprise of course, an editorials attacking Israel is the norm, right? No what makes this editorial different is that this time those evil horrible sickening Jews monsters are being condemned for ( wait for it ….. ) for **NOT** discriminating against gays.

It seems that these devious sneaky Jew Israeli fascists cleverly realized what public relations boon it would be to completely ban discrimination against gays in all facets of society so the cruel heartless Israeli oppressors, for absolutely no other reason other to gain propaganda points over the Palestinians decided to be far more progressive in the area of gay rights earlier than almost anywhere on earth, even Western Europe.

Well thank goodness the New York Times stepped in to explain to any self respecting lesbian or gay man that there is no reason to support Israel just because homosexuality means one thing in Palestine and one thing only that is instant death by lynching normaly by the person's own family. As is well known and documented, any openly gay person in Palestine would be murdered in a half a heartbeat, and for this reason hundereds of Palestinian gays have been granted political asylum in Israel.

  27. Most of this hatred is spread by so called Christian churches. Hatred for people for any raeason is not Christian. But Catholic and Protestant missionaries along with political bias go into these countries;to preach and spread hate. It is unconscienable, but true.

  29. Hi everyone,
I'm straight, married with two kids. Why people cannot understand that there are persons that love each other, whatever their sex is? Those who do not like homosexuality, well, look, no one is forcing you. It is frankly not my business to go about forbidding other's happiness or tell them how they should live their lives, not even to my kids when they will grow up.
Thanks Amnesty for a great work in defence of people at risk of death, persecution, torture, flagging and a long sad list. Is for brave people to come out in defence of people that we might not necessary agree with.
    All human rights for all.
    Take care.

  31. Judonimh has distorted the complex realities facing gays in israel & the Occupied Territories.

Yes , gays thrive in israel — if they're Jews.

Gay Palestinians get "political asylum" in israel ?

In apartheid israel, that's not a question at all ! The question for the Palestinians in israel is — will they get "PERMITS" to even STAY in israel ?

Many young Palestinians live in hiding in their own ancestral land inside israel for fear of deportation by the police.

Fuad Moussa, a young Palestinian from Ramallah, lived for 4 years with his Jewish boyfriend Ezra in a middleclass neighborhood in Jerusalem.

    Then his permit was revoked.

He wasn't an activist for Palestine. He worked in Ezra's plumbing business.

But under israeli law he couldn't stay in israel.

Many times the police arrested him & deported him to the Occupied Territories.

Some of his fundamentalist kinsmen had threatened to kill him for being gay.

The israeli police knew deportation meant death for him, but they refused to change their course of action.

"This time," an israeli police officer told him,"we are going to take care of you ; I will personally make sure that you are sent back where you came from."

Each time he was sent back, Ezra drove across the border & smuggled him back in the trunk of his car, which didn't attract attention at checkpoints because of the israeli license plates.

But the cops knew where Fuad & Ezra lived.

In 2 weeks he was arrested 6 times.

The last time the cops took him at night to a court.

There, in a swift legal process, a judge ruled he either be imprisoned or deported at once & permanently to Ramallah.

Next morning Ezra submitted an appeal.

Fuad was then put under house arrest at Ezra's residence INDEFINITELY.

He'd to stay confined to the one – bedroom apartment.

ILGA, the International LGBT & Intersex Association, says the situation for gays in Palestine is UNEVEN.

Israeli Occupation has so DESTABILIZED & WEAKENED the Palestinian government that it can't function to protect its people, including gays.

The Palestinian Authority has simply ordered that the old laws be retained in the Territories in the present situation.

In the West Bank, the law introduced under Jordan in 1951 LEGALIZES gay relationships, while in Gaza the 1936 British Ordinance No. 74 OUTLAWS gay relationships for MEN ONLY while accepting those between women.

On the issue of Palestine, gay groups fight a double oppression — that of the imperialist settler / state Occupation of their lands, & that of discrimination & violence by Islamic reactionary forces within their own civil society.

BOTH these oppressions FEED OFF THE OTHER — the first as the primary & decisive factor, the latter as the complementary one.

Organizations like "Queers for Palestine" & "QUIT" ( "Queers Undermining Israeli Terror" ) need to keep both in sight for the future of Palestine.

Is Amnesty against sodomy laws like shown up here, then promoting it as NORMAL sexual practice UNBELEIVABLE, ___Can the human race reproduce by this sadic practice, can transgender reproduce themselves, I doubt so, ____IS anything unnatural (even for animals) Protected by Amnesty. ____HumanRights Watch, OpenSocietyInstitute, NationalEndowment for Democracy, USaid are G.Soros (NED-CIA agent) participation foundations used to infiltrate nations, start movements for armed revolts following innocent so-called peaceful protests like the OTPOR movement did for Yugoslavia, to take control of their resources and economy and politics (installing US-NATOpuppets). ____IS THIS the Amnesty goal also.—Question:

  37. I often think of what Martin Luther King Jr. said when I think about LGBT rights. He said: "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." Although speaking under different circumstances, his sentiments still ring true today. I hope straight ppl who might be neutral or at least open to the idea of "live and let live" will start to wake up and realize that gay Americans are Americans first and foremost and simply want to have the same rights that heterosexuals take for granted everyday. I believe it's getting better, but there is still an enormous amount of work to be done if we want to undo the years of homophobic damage being wrought by ignorant people across the globe.

  39. I'm a Str8 women with 2 children. I don't understand how some people think it's up to them to enforce their beliefs in everyone! Every person Gay, Str8, Black, White, Green or Purple has a right to live as they want. How does their life affect you? It doesn't! I have close friends that are gay and they are wonderful people. You might miss out on a great friend bc of who they choose to sleep with in Their bed! You use God as a reason to hate, God loves all people! Stop hating this world needs more love! Or move to one of those crappy anti gay countries and stop giving America a bad name!
