Sending an e-mail seems harmless enough, but Shi Tao has been in prison for it for over six years. His crime: working as a journalist and exposing censorship.
In that e-mail, Shi Tao commented on Chinese authorities’ directive to downplay the 15th anniversary of the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy activists. When a journalist speaks out for human rights and the lives of others in China he risks his own — even in a digital world of e-mail and the web.
And how appropriate that today, World Press Freedom Day, focuses on media freedom in the digital age. World Press Freedom Day was established by the United Nations as a tribute to journalists, celebrating the very rights that Shi Tao cannot enjoy: the fundamental human right to freedom of expression. All over the world, journalists constantly face imprisonment, violence, intimidation, detainment and even torture for reporting on human rights violations.
Like Shi Tao, J.S. Tissainayagam (also known as “Tissa”) faced a similar punishment for his journalism. For criticizing the Sri Lankan government in his writing, Tissa was sentenced to 20 years of hard labor. Due to the work of Amnesty International and many concerned citizens around the world, Tissa was pardoned last year on World Press Freedom Day.
But the struggle for press freedom did not end in Sri Lanka. Prageeth Eknaligoda, a journalist and political analyst for the website Lanka-e-News went missing more than 15 months ago. One week before his disappearance, Eknaligoda had just completed a comparative analysis for the presidential election, coming out in favor of the opposition candidate.
On this World Press Freedom Day, let’s raise our voice for the voiceless and speak out for Shi Tao and Prageeth Eknaligoda. Mention their names on your blog, Facebook and Twitter to bring attention to press freedom and celebrate the new media of the 21st century.

It is easy and quite deceitful and intellectually lazy to call the Tamil freedom fighters "terrorists".
I was a Hungarian freedom fighter in 1956 and because we fought the Russians we were regarded as 'wonderfull" by the USA, who proptly let us get slaughtered and did not lift a finger ( there was no OIL in Hungary ).
When the Third World oppressed fight back they are vilified instead of being recognised as the victim.
No wonder the US and it's "coalition" is loosing support all around the globe – even though it is the supposed champion of democracy.
thanks for reminding us.
A full investigation is certainly required not just for reconciliation but also for general justice as well.
Otherwise, the world rogue nations will follow the same and there are more vulnerable community like Tamils will pay their lives for so called territorial integrity.
The present day China has inherited a legacy of undemocratic conduct and human right violations but we expect a different attitude from Yahoo – a bit constructive one, in favor of openness, against censorship and pro freedom of Press. Yahoo must exhibit its commitment to values and ethics, preserve secrecy of its e mail users. Every user of Yahoo mail puts an unwritten trust of confidentiality in it when he opts to use it for communicating with other people. This sacred trust in no case be violated. This is an appeal and very just one.
Sri Lanka is a failed state
. Now sanctions is the only answer.
Tamils have waited long enough for justice.
Delayed justice is denied justice.
If we allow Sri Lanka to get away with mass murders, human right abuses and crimes against humanity, Sri Lanka will continue its agenda of silent genocide of Tamils with the blessings of the international community.
UNSG must act without delay and establish an independent Tribunal for Sri Lanka.

What is the root cause of all these?
Please go back in Sri Lanka past and analyse it !
The TRUTH would be obvious.
It is important to have the TRUTH of all Sri Lanka conflicts need to be brought to the public.
That is why it is paramount to have an independant international investigation.
Only by analysing the root cause there would be a genuine RECONCILLIATION.
This type of activity is common and expected by china. But to have yahoo be a part of it, willfully, is disgusting.

War Long Over, Media Still Muzzled
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) lists 24 Sri Lankan journalists killed since 2006.
Sri Lanka “No Fire Zone” was kill Zone
On many occasions, the government and the military declared no-fire zones (NFZ) and claimed the “security forces are fully committed to provide maximum safety for civilians”.
Far from being protected, civilians were slaughtered in their thousands as the military mercilessly subjected these areas to aerial and artillery bombardment.

In the closing days of the war, Sri Lankan government forces shelled hospitals and food distribution centers and gathered ethnic Tamil civilians in “no fire zones” and shelled those locations, all the while claiming a policy of “zero civilian casualties.”

Indians demand prosecution of Rajapaksa
India leader R. Nallakannu here on Wednesday inaugurated a signature campaign demanding the prosecution of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the international court, “for his role in the genocide in the island nation during its war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.”
The campaign, an initiative of the Tamirabharani Panpaattu Arangam, is being conducted in the wake of the United Nation's revelations of “war crimes” by Sri Lankan armed forces.
The UN report has made public the liberal use of cluster bombs on the innocent public, missile attack on hospitals and refugee camps, denial of humanitarian aid to the affected population, attack on the media and civil society.
The signature campaign was launched at the Tirunelveli railway junction, said M.A. Britto of the Tamirabharani Panpaattu Arangam and director, ‘Vaan Muhil'.
Former head, Department of Tamil Studies, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tho. Paramasivan, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Political Council member K.M.A. Nizam, CPI district secretary R. Shanmugavel and others participated in the signature campaign.

Tamils protest in Canada
Tamils protest in a large demonstration in Toronto, Canada to support a United Nations panel’s call for a probe of alleged war crimes committed near the end of Sri Lanka’s war.
In a recent report, the three-member UN panel cited “credible allegations” Sri Lanka Army violated international humanitarian and human-rights law during the final months of the conflict
The report said “tens of thousands” of civilians were killed in the conflict zone in the island country’s Tamil-dominated northeast. Most died due to government shelling that allegedly targeted no-fire zones, hospitals and relief sites operated by the UN and Red Cross

The attack on the Media outlet – Siyatha office in Sri Lanka
This is a Sri Lankan govt of the Rajapaksa, for the Rajapaksas, by the Rajapaksas
This comment by Rajapaksa ruthless regime thug is very, very funny
“We need to maintain “emergency laws ” to ensure the “safety and security ” of the nation,” the Sri Lankans thug informed parliament, days after the slash and burn attack on the Media outlet – Siyatha office, located in a downtown Colombo high security zone
Sri Lankan police claimed to be ‘clueless’ about the identity of the Siyatha attackers.
I think, this media office in close proximity to the presidential abode is attacked, only one of two explanations are possible: either the
authorities are criminally incompetent or they are criminally complicit…
Post-war, Sri Lanka’s defence expenditure remains stratospherical; a host of repressive legislations are still in place and the humiliatingly discriminatory practice of registering Tamils has resumed – in the name of security. And yet, deputy ministers tie public officials to trees in the West; mysterious attackers bulldoze temples and dispossess Sinhala villagers in the East, to make way for tourist hotels and displaced Northern Tamils returning to their ancestral lands are expelled, to build cantonments.
Behind a façade of democracy, impunity is ravaging post-war Sri Lanka.

War crime, genocide case against Rajapaksa
War crime, genocide case against Rajapaksa placed in Norway courts
Leading Norwegian Lawyer on Human Rights, Harald Stabell, has filed a case under the Norwegian national law, against the Sri Lankan President and Commander-in-Chief of the SL armed forces, Mahinda Rajapaksa, his brother and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, and former Sri Lanka Army commander Sarath Fonseka, now in Rajapaksa’s custody, and several other SL commanders, for allegedly committing War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and Genocide against Eezham Tamils. The case is filed on behalf of the Norwegian Council of Eezham Tamils (NCET) and 15 affected Norwegian Tamils. Following the latest revelations by the Norwegian Minister Erik Solheim in Norwegian national media NRK about his knowledge of the white-flag surrender, which turned into a war crime, the lawyers have indicated to the Chief Prosecutor of Norway that evidence may be sought from Mr. Solheim.
Rajapaksa lies permeate the whole country !!

Oh. My. God. The Eelamists are defecating and suicide bombing on this post, also. Typical.
@ Subramaniam: brain damage has obviously prevented you from mentioning that Paranirupasingham Devakumar was (according to the CJP), murdered by the LTTE – the sole saviours of the Tamil people.
"Devakumar, Jaffna correspondent for the independent channel News 1st, was stabbed to death when he was attacked by supporters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), according to Sunanda Deshapriya, spokesman for local press freedom group the Free Media Movement." http://www.cpj.org/killed/2008/paranirupasingham-…
The following people on your list were NOT journalists.
Suresh Linbiyo, Voice of Tigers
T. Tharmalingam, Voice of Tigers
Isaivizhi Chempiyan, Voice of Tigers
They all worked for Voice of the Tigers, the propaganda arm of the LTTE. VOT got hit by an air-strike and they got killed. The technical term is 'proportionate collateral damage.'
As for the other, its a tragedy that even one journalist was killed in SL during the war. GoSL were undoubtedly guilty of murdering or through neglect, allowing the murder of journalists.
The whiny Eelamists however are unable to accept that their failed leader also did the same.
I simply can't believe that the all-round 100% charitable social worker group, the LTTE actually murdered journalists! I'm shocked. Just shocked!
I wonder if the newly elected Eezam Tamil Canadian MP (with her lovely new baby) will demand that the Canadian Govt immediately investigate these 'Eelamish' crimes against journalists.
Rathika Sitsabaiesan said, “For me the focus is people being treated with fairness, equality, dignity and justice,”. Of course, of course – as long the people didn't disagree with the LTTE! 🙂 🙂

More Sri Lankan journalists murdered by the LTTE include:
Bala Nadarajah Iyer."The EPDP's official news Web site reported that the LTTE had threatened Iyer before his murder.
Rashmi Mohamed who died when an [LTTE] a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device."
I'm even more shocked and appalled that the totally innocent, 100% peaceful LTTE would ever set off suicide bombs without first checking that a journalist might get killed.
