Chances are, if we’ve met, you’ve heard me talk about Get On The Bus for Human Rights (GOTB)! I’ve got several versions under my belt — the PowerPoint presentation, the 5 minute DVD, and a Twitter-friendly elevator pitch, but basically:
“We are the largest grassroots event organized by Amnesty International USA members. Take action with us on the third Friday in April – that’s today! Speakers a.m. Rallies p.m.”
The idea was simple: Take your activism to the next level. Members of local AIUSA chapter Group 133 from Somerville, MA were working on the case of Ken Saro-Wiwa, who is best remembered as an environmental defender. He was among the leaders of peaceful protests against the environmental exploitation by oil companies and physical abuse by security forces in the Niger Delta region.
According to GOTB historians, one group member wanted to hop on a bus down to New York City to visit the Nigerian Consulate. After all, why not hand deliver our letters and call attention to our concerns in person?
Thirty people rode down to NYC that first year in support of human rights. Since New York City is relatively close to Boston and hosts diplomatic offices for practically every nation in the world, it’s been easy to continue our annual human rights pilgrimage. We now estimate around 1,000 people participate, taking peaceful action on behalf of three or more cases in one day.
As we approach our 15th anniversary, we can celebrate many successes including: calling attention to femicides in Guatemala, highlighting the failure of Guatemalan authorities to adequately investigate murders of over 1,900 young women; helping to secure the release of Professor Mesfin Woldemariam, Ethopia’s most prominent human rights defender; and successfully lobbying TIAA CREF to adopt socially responsible investment policies.
Here’s the line-up of what we’ll be supporting today during GOTB 2010:
- Calling for the release of Sri Lankan journalist, J.S. Tissainayagam who was recently sentenced to 20 years of hard labor for commentary that was often critical of the Sri Lankan government; one of the last columns published before his arrest was titled “Child soldiers: What the govt. report did not report.”
- Keeping the pressure on the Myanmar government to release Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and all Burmese political prisoners. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 13 of the past 20 years, in detention or under house arrest. She continues to be held under house arrest without charge or trial.
- Demanding that Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen be released from prison immediately. He was handed a 6-year prison term after a secret trial that found him guilty of ‘subversion’ for producing a documentary giving voice to Tibetan grievances under Chinese rule.
- Calling upon the Democratic Republic of Congo to support women’s rights defenders who have come under severe threat.

Unspoken Genocide: Convention on War Crimes and Genocide in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has presented model genocide, a model which has successfully massacred hundreds of thousands of civilians without any witness. A war without witness is what Sri Lanka has presented before the world as a model. This model has now given strength to the rest of the oppressing governments of the world and shown ways of how to oppress in a more brutal way without having to worry about international or national criticisms.
Genocide does not only mean killing. And the Sri Lankan Government did not only take the lives away. The Genocide against the Tamils in Sri Lanka did not start very recently. It has been systematically implemented in various forms from time to time. It is that systematic implementation which reached its peak in 2009.
But, there have been an ongoing record of grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, for a long time in the island of Sri Lanka, and the pattern of this long record has to be analysed by anyone investigating the War Crimes.
My view is that the War Crimes, carried out by the Sri Lankan military with direct and indirect help from various actors of the international community (China)
It is also equally important to understand that a systematic and prolonged genocide doesn't take place without a deep mythology behind it.
Like the hatred against the Jews in Europe throughout many years had resulted in the Holocaust, which led to the Genocide Convention, we also see clear evidences of a racial mythology originating from the Buddhist chronicle of Mahavamsa in the island of Sri Lanka.
The dangerous dimensions of the racism caused by the Mahavamsa mindset, which attacks the Tamil people.
One reason on why this brutality of Sri Lanka is more concerned to us as 'Indians', is because, our hands are soaked in that blood.
It's our tax that went as arms and ammunition to commit those war crimes. It is with our money and in our soil, that those Sri Lankan military officials who committed the war crimes were given training.
One could say, how can India be responsible just because it sold arms and provided training? You may add up saying that how can India control the affairs of another country. This was what the Indian high commands were saying all through
From early 1980s, more than 300 Tamil Nadu fishermen were killed by the Sri Lankan Navy. Thousands have been abducted and tortured by them. The whereabouts of many such abducted fishermen are not known for years. Their families are in dismay as to whether their loved ones are alive or not. This is continuing even today, though the Sri Lankan Government has declared that the so-called ‘war against terrorism’ is over. Aren’t the Tamil Nadu fishermen Indians? Isn’t the Indian Government with its Navy responsible for their safety? Aren’t the Indian media and Indian politicians concerned about a foreign navy crossing our borders and killing our people? If the Indian fishermen are abducted or arrested by the Pakistan Navy, it becomes a national issue. But even if the Sri Lankan Navy kills Indian fishermen its nothing. It is still a mystery why this has never been an issue. Legally speaking, the Tamil Nadu Government and the Indian Government have all the legal rights to sue the Sri Lankan Navy under war crimes for its brutality against Tamil Nadu fishermen

Meanwhile, the woman whose body was found in I’lavaalai Sunday had been sexually assaulted before being killed, according I’lavaalai police. Mysterious killings and persons going missing have increased in Jaffna peninsula in recent times causing its residents to be gripped in fear and anxiety, sources in Jaffna said.

We were captured in large amount. Now day and night only I hear is screaming voices. Our brothers have been needled, chopped and let in the blood until they tell where our leaders and secret camps are. I cannot even write about what is happening to my sisters in the camps. We were captured in large amount. Now day and night only I hear is screaming voices. Our brothers have been needled, chopped and let in the blood until they tell where our leaders and secret camps are. I cannot even write about what is happening to my sisters in the camps. All I hear is the voice of deadly screaming day and night. Blood is flowing all over the camp and smell of blood is the only smell in the air. Sinhala military is determined to finish our lives in 20s and 30s . Voice of torture and voice of being raped, rhymes each other and echoing all over place as I cannot believe I am living on earth. It looks like a scene in a horror movie. Next day we ourselves have to take those bodies and cremate them. I do not even know whose body I am cremating. The faces are covered by cloth and only they ask us to burn them. Whoever it could be but I know he is lucky to die. I am not yet lucky enough to be killed. I just need death , that is enough for me now. All I can see is , i am going to die here in the same dungeon. I know my life is going to end here. I cannot see many faces that were there when we were brought down here. Yes many of them have already left the earth. Eventually our group is missing many faces and it shows we all will die here soon. Even we all scream louder , nobody can hear us. Four "New" Sinhala Doctors Conduct a Medical Camp in Mandaitheevu
The North- South Dialogue Desk of The Lanka Centre for Social Concern organized a Medical Camp conducted by the recently passed out doctors of Colombo Medical College from 5th April to 7th April 2010.
In Vavuniya, we had a visit to VAROD (Vanni Rehabilitation Organization for the Disabled- Differently Able). The Sinhalese doctors were thunder struck to see the young wounded inmates and listen to their stories of agony during the war. Sewwandi was so immersed in their stories of pain; we had to extend our stay at VAROD by a half an hour.
“They are like us. Their wounds although healed or is healing but their hearts need to be healed. Today I realized the cruelty of war especially the gravity of cluster bomb attacks and haphazard shelling. I could not bear the pain of the youngster who is paralyzed forever and more than that his loosing all of his loved ones. Still some of them carry the pieces of shells in their bodies and that shows they carry the pieces of hatred towards us in their bodies. We need to remove these pieces of venom from their hearts”.
These were the on the spot comments of the doctors on their first exposure to the realities of war. Anuradha, who works in the rehabilitation Centre for the War- Victim Sri Lanka Soldiers said, “I too treat the soldiers who are going though wounds of war. But these Tamil war victims look really hopeless, depressed as many have lost all they possessed including their loved ones and surely their suffering is more acute
The A-9 journey was a special attraction for these medical doctors on their first visit to Jaffna. “I felt that A9 is neither a pathway to Jaffna nor a link between North and South of Sri Lanka. I could see only army sentry points and extended army camps throughout the journey to Jaffna. Why are there so many Buddha statues along the A9 route? Are they in memory of the Army personnel engaged in war?
Were there Buddhists along this path other than the Sri Lankan forces?

Both of them are related through marriage, had come to Paranthan after the 1983 July riots from Kandy. They were estate Tamils and had to find a safer place for their children and their cultivation.
They related their story of displacement with laughter, fear, anger and some moments in tears, “We lost everything we had bit by bit in this displacement and at last we became beggars. Now we are beggars.”
Clinton has three girls and a boy. Vishnunathan had lost two sons, aged nineteen and twenty two in the final battle, those who were conscripted four months before. His son in law lost his hand and the old aunt’s stomach was ripped open in a shell attack.
“From Paranthan, as other people were leaving, we too joined. It was terrible as the air attacks were fierce and the ground attacks were merciless. Some of our relations were killed with their little ones. Attacks were random and haphazard. We collected all our belongings including the asbestos sheets, door frames, furniture and the sacks of paddy, loaded them in a tractor and moved towards Murasumottai. We just settled there for a few months, midst heavy shelling. We put up a small hut for us only to sleep and built a bunker for safety. When it was unbearable we collected all we could take and moved towards Dharmapuram. On this journey we did not have a vehicle, so we had to take all we could on foot. The journey to Udayarakattu was very hard.
Some of our own people, three of them died due to the tiresome, hard journey and bombardment. A few weeks there and we moved to Suvandirapuram. Every displacement reduced our traveling baggage.
Then to Vaikkal, Vattuwal and Rettai Vaikkal (Double Canal) were the last places of our displacement till we crossed over to the Army controlled areas. In all these places we suffered.”
They answered two of our questions posed to them, “Do you enjoy peace now? What do you expect from the Sri Lankan government?”
“There is some kind of normalcy, no more arms and fierce war but there is no peace. Still we are struggling to live. There are so many of our children in detention camps, some more in the IDP camps. There are armed groups and the Chavekachcheri incident (A seventeen year old boy was murdered by unknown persons) proves the point. There is continuous checking in our resettled areas in Paranthan. We are suspected. Then do you think we enjoy peace in freedom?"
“We want the government to compensate our loss. We lost everything. At least the government must help us in self employment by income generating projects. We were not beggars but today we have been made beggars. Recently we had to come to the convent to beg for some cash to buy some food to survive. We need employment”

Just before the camp Medical Camp at Mandaitivu, the doctors visited the Mandaitivu village and the people in their own displaced huts. For the past twenty years, the Sri Lankan Navy has captured the Mandaitivu village with these peoples’ houses and made it a High Security Zone.
The people were displaced several times in different places and have last come back but they are staying outside of the naval camp in huts just gazing at their own homes occupied by the Navy. The doctors spoke to the people and observed their utter poverty.
There were about sixty patients, infants, children, young and old. These young doctors attended to the patients with care and concern. Rev Fr. Paul and Sr. Priscilla acted as translators.
We will always remember them” During the visit to the Mandaitivu village, the southerners met some excombatants.
They listened to their stories of struggle and the life in the detention camps. In one house, we discovered a photograph of a young man garlanded. The young doctors inquired about it from the lady who was at home. She said, “This is my eldest son. He was in the Sea Tiger unit. He was killed in battle. He is my beloved son”.
When we were returning after the visit to the village, some of them were arguing, “Why did they join the movement? Why does this mother venerate her son who was in the LTTE?”
Within the group we could hear the whisperings, “Surely there must be a reason for the Tamils to take up arms. They saw it as a Struggle for liberation. That is the reason for these youngsters to volunteer and commit for the cause. As we see in our villages, the war heroes are honored, roads named after them and statues are made, these people honor their young leaders who sacrificed their lives for a cause”.
On the same day late at night the youngsters met a first year student from the Faculty of Arts in the Jaffna University. He explained his last hours in Vanni with shelling , a few months in the IDP camp in Zone 5 of Cheddikulam and his release to be in the university to pursue his studies.
He recalled with deep pain that his parents are still in the IDP camp and he had visited them recently.
On our way back to Colombo, we visited The Holy Family Sisters at Kilinochchi. It was a revealing episode. We could see their convent just shape up upon return. One sister shared with us, “Seventy one of my students from Kilinochchi Maha Vidiyalayam were killed in this recent war. Many are missing. When I go to school, I feel the loss and the immense pain.
Recently I asked the children, who had survived, displaced, lived in the IDP camps and just returned to Kilinochchi, to write about their memories of the final stages of war. I meant it to be a therapeutic exercise. They wrote so many pages in tears, sobbing and some moments with anger and fear.”
We had an opportunity to glance through these letters of pain and anguish. Almost all of these were ended with “Nandri” (Thank You Sister). That means the writing of the letters initiated by the Teacher sister of these little ones had brought some kind of relief to relieve their pain.
As we coming out of the Holy Family Convent we were introduced to the lady cook of their house. She had lost two of her children in the recent Civil War. She lost her son as he was a victim of a Sri Lankan Army kfir attack. She had to bury her son hurriedly as they were running away in fear and in the dark. She does not know where he is buried and how he was buried.
The loss of the daughter she was unable to recall. She was lost in the rush in the final hours of the battle as they were walking back into the Army controlled area through the waters. Although her friends pacify her saying that the eighteen year daughter is still living, she believes that she is no more on earth. She says that she experiences sense of a deep loss.
This mother, a widow was gazing at Fr. Sudam for awhile and began to weep and wail. She cried, “He looks like my son, my own son who is no longer on earth. My son was killed”

CALL TO STOP LAND BEING ROBBED FROM MANAMPITIYA TAMIL VILLAGE
il 19, 2010: According to historical records, the Manampitiya Tamil Village was established in 1893. In 1897 the residents of this village constructed a dam across the Galarawila River, a branch of the Mahaweli River in order to obtain water for their farming activities. However, the dam was destroyed in the floods that took place in 1948 and it has not been reconstructed by authorities to date.
The implementation of the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Project did not provide any relief to these residents who were forced to face several more hardships as a result of their land being acquired by the government for development work. Of the 250 families residing in this village at the time, 120 families had marsh land in addition to their farmland. Only 16 families were provided with their entire property while the other families were only provided with a quarter-acre plot. This was not the case for other residents of the area who were provided with half-acre plots of land to cultivate on. Meanwhile, 70 plots of land that were meant for the residents of this village had been divided amongst officials of the Manampitiya Divisional Secretariat

We are thunder struck to see this article, because each and every word quoted as our views are not at all ours but the priest who has written this article. We are really shocked to see the so called priest talking about the A9 road and quoting them as our view. We didn’t see any Buddhist statues in the A9 road. Its so clear the intentions of the PRIEST that is to insult Buddhism as well. This is a good lesson for us as new doctors. We didn’t know of this so called organization.( NSSD). Its very funny to find out that the secretary mentioned by the priest is a kid who has just left the school. This was initially organized as a trip. We had never gone to Jaffna and we thought that this is a great opportunity. Then we were asked whether we can do a Health campaign. We were so pleased to do it because rather than just going on a trip , if we can help the poor. But look what has happened now. This so called preist has used us to obtain his achievements. This is really inhumane,( menna mevata thami balu vada kiyanne)Because we were on a humanitarian intent and treating like this is really bad. We want to apologize from all the parties who was hurt by this article. We don’t find much difference in north and south among poor. We have done many health camps in south too. Its the poor who suffer in both north and south in a developing country like ours. The best we can do is to help them when ever we can and we did it. But see what this priest has done. Sri Lanka has presented to the world a viable model of genocide by successfully killing ‘hundreds of thousands of civilians without any witness’ and not eliciting international or national censure or condemnation.
So nothing is safe in Sri Lanka today in the sense that there is no privacy, you can’t afford to write anything that might construed as against the state. You cannot afford to speak or show a picture to anyone that may be seen as offensive to the state.
The countries like India, China, Pakistan and Iran for their short term interests are making deals with the Rajapakses. In the long or even mid-term, this is going to boomerang on all of us because the Sri Lankan interests cannot flourish. Sri Lanka is a bucket without water.
Unfortunately Sri Lanka does not have oil and natural gas like Burma. If it did, it would be a different story. So this is something that has to be deal with.The point is the Rajapakses may have billions of dollar abroad already. They will go away but what will happen to the Sri Lankan when they leave. And that is what the international community has to start worrying about. And if there is any commitment to rule of law and human dignity, this the time for the international community to intervene
Even though a visitor to India held a valid Indian visa, the Indian government officials denied the aged lady permission to entry and deported her immediately.
This reaction by the Indian government in this case is understood in political circles as a callous response overstepping the legal apparatus functioning freely in Indian politics.
Permission of valid visa to the aged lady, whoever it is, qualified her to be treated as a lawful citizen of another country. After a strict scrutiny of applicant’s status and purpose of visit, the visa was granted to the aged lady. il 19, 2010: According to historical records, the Manampitiya Tamil Village was established in 1893. In 1897 the residents of this village constructed a dam across the Galarawila River, a branch of the Mahaweli River in order to obtain water for their farming activities. However, the dam was destroyed in the floods that took place in 1948 and it has not been reconstructed by authorities to date.
The implementation of the Accelerated Mahaweli Development Project did not provide any relief to these residents who were forced to face several more hardships as a result of their land being acquired by the government for development work. Of the 250 families residing in this village at the time, 120 families had marsh land in addition to their farmland. Only 16 families were provided with their entire property while the other families were only provided with a quarter-acre plot. This was not the case for other residents of the area who were provided with half-acre plots of land to cultivate on. Meanwhile, 70 plots of land that were meant for the residents of this village had been divided amongst officials of the Manampitiya Divisional Secretariat

Sri Lanka has presented to the world a viable model of genocide by successfully killing ‘hundreds of thousands of civilians without any witness’ and not eliciting international or national censure or condemnation.

Even though a visitor to India held a valid Indian visa, the Indian government officials denied the aged lady permission to entry and deported her immediately.
This reaction by the Indian government in this case is understood in political circles as a callous response overstepping the legal apparatus functioning freely in Indian politics.
Permission of valid visa to the aged lady, whoever it is, qualified her to be treated as a lawful citizen of another country. After a strict scrutiny of applicant’s status and purpose of visit, the visa was granted to the aged lady. Sri Lanka’s new parliament must drop emergency laws
Sri Lanka's first post-war parliament must get rid of draconian emergency laws that have allowed for decades of widespread human rights abuses, Amnesty International said today.
Ahead of the first sitting of Sri Lanka's first post-war parliament on 22 April, Amnesty International is calling on Sri Lanka to lift the State of Emergency that has been in force almost continuously since 1971, and to abolish the Prevention of Terrorism Act and other associated emergency security laws and regulations, replacing them with human rights-friendly laws.
The emergency laws grant state authorities sweeping powers of detention and permit the use of secret prisons, a practice that encourages human rights abuses like enforced disappearances, torture and death in custody, which could constitute crimes under international law. In the last thirty years, thousands of Sri Lankans have spent years in detention without trial.
Over the past year, the government has increasingly used these laws to crack down on journalists, political opponents, and trade unionists.
"Sri Lanka must repeal these laws and end impunity for human rights violations if it wants to move forward," said Madhu Malhotra, Amnesty International's Asia-Pacific Deputy Director. "The Prevention of Terrorism Act, the Public Security Ordinance and other emergency provisions in Sri Lanka enable security forces to systematically violate human rights."
Since the war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ended almost a year ago, Sri Lankan legislators have continued to extend the State of Emergency on a monthly basis. Successive governments have ignored calls for repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
"The war is over. Perpetuation of the emergency is now just being used as a weapon against political opposition, and as a quick fix for poor law enforcement practices and a dysfunctional justice system," said Madhu Malhotra.
Amnesty International is calling on the new parliament to press for the release of people detained under Sri Lanka's emergency laws unless they are charged with an internationally recognized criminal offence, and are tried in regular civilian courts to international standards for fair trial.
TAMIL asylum-seekers `hoodwinked' by Indonesians
Nearly 140 TAMIL asylum-seekers who ended their sit-in on a western Java dock this week claim they were hoodwinked by Indonesian authorities, who told them they would not be sent to prison. The Merak asylum-seekers say they were "kidnapped" when they were taken to the Australian-built Tanjung Pinang immigration jail. While up to 50 others who left their boat and made their way to Christmas Island separately.

Tamil Student arrested
Mr. BALASUBRAMANIYAM JEYAVATHANAN who returned to Sri Lanka after completing his studies in the UK was arrested by the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) on 26th February 2010. Since then his family reported facing threats and this has been brought to the attention of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
His father PARAMAKURUNATHAN BALASUBRAMANIYAM of ARALI South, JAFFNA attacked by unknown armed men who came in a white van.
He is currently being treated in JAFFNA Teaching hospital with severe assault injuries.

Struggle's fought on internal & external lines. Internally by movements — externally through logistics and the creation of new fronts.
Internally, now, the people are prisoners. The struggle is in exteme survival mode. Just to hold together faith, life itself, the safety of the sisters & the new generation, & the land, the land as the mother of the race, will take everything the people have, as well as sending out their story.
Externally it's almost as bad, the Asian goon governments are in collaboration. It's just a historical moment for their particular alliance, before greater forces over which they have no control overtake them & change the region.
A national council of unity in exile, perhaps in the West, is the first step towards a future nation. This should be worked for, not just for today's needs, but for the vast opportunities tomorrow is bringing, for S Asia is changing fast, from the Nepal foothills of the Himalayas down. Tens of thousand souls forever perished in those early months of 2009, not just on that sombre May. Our agonising cries, to the world we appealed. Our kith and kin crushed, scattered like the ash of withered leaves on their native soil. Our ebbing hopes clung to the morality of leaders and nations; we tried in vain to save them from unabated carnage. Oh, land of Vanni, once our refuge, why has your life been sacrificed?
With unforgettable sadness, we grieve for the children of Eezham who died longing for dignity, struggling for justice, and fighting for freedom. We also remember those who languish in open prisons even today. A once self-reliant, self-sufficient and dignified Tamil nation suffers in silence behind Sri Lanka’s barbed wires.
“Never again”, said the civilised world to genocide. But what we witnessed in Mullivaikal were not only mass atrocities against a distinct ethnic group but also an obituary for the very treaties adopted to protect the rights of all human beings – the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This is not a bedtime horror story. This is not about something that happened thousands of years ago when giants and barbarians roamed the earth. This is not a Hollywood movie about man eating cannibals. What Channel 4 had shown in UK is a real story of a people group called Tamils in the horror island of Sri Lanka.
Many were shocked and felt so sick in and out after seeing the video clips of Tamils being executed as innocent lambs in broad day light. Strangely many Tamils living in the West haven't found it as shocking because they have witnessed hundreds and hundreds of such incidents in their own villages and towns. Their eyes had seen their loved ones being butchered with knives, swords, guns and bombs.They saw their houses being burned down and farms being destroyed.
They saw their sisters and mothers being abused and raped. Their fathers were shot and killed in front of weeping children and mothers. Their loved ones and friends were killed in prisons, schools, hospitals and in their own homes. Tamils in Sri Lanka no longer have a voice and they no longer have the right to turn left or right. They see their enemies marching from the North, South, East and the West. A community that once fought for equal rights is now fighting for its bare survival.
Interestingly, Sri Lankan war criminals who have been committing such deadly crimes are not all happy about the world watching what they do to the vulnerable. They have no way to defend their atrocities so they just deny the video as fake. UN investigators have confirmed that the video was authentic.
What was shown on channel 4 is just a drop in the ocean. Many eyes in Sri Lanka have witnessed crimes that were much crueller than this. Thousands of digital pictures and video clips, many satellite images and other concrete evidences are available to prove without a shadow of doubt that Sri Lankan regime is still committing countless crimes against the Tamil community in Sri Lanka with the excuse of fighting terror.
Blind folded, hands tied behind their backs, naked, on their knees, not knowing what was happening around but hearing just the sounds of Sinhala soldiers mocking and laughing, occasional gun shots. What could have gone through the minds of these young Tamil men in their final hours? They were executed in a most cruel manner just for a simple reason that they were Tamils.
Their mothers bore them in pain, gave birth to them in pain, fed them from their breasts and toiled for years to bring them up. Their children found safety and protection in their arms. These were ordinary men who had dreams about their future. Just like any of us, they also wanted to see their children growing up. They trusted the world around them to come for their rescue even at their last minutes. But their lives were cut short. They were looked down by their enemies as rotten pieces of meat that don't even need proper burial.

The Government of Sri Lanka was attacking the hapless and defenceless Tamil people assembled in a small area in the Vanni nearly year ago.
We must tell the world of the sheer criminality of Sinhala politics and why the Tamils cannot hope to get justice from the politics of the abattoir practiced by the ruling elite.
It is this tendency to political and racial violence that the Sinhala politicians have exploited to keep the Tamils under their heels. The tragic story of a cultured and educated Tamil people desiring to live in peace with the Sinhalese but requesting equality in education, employment and development of their land being massacred and violently thwarted by government thugs and the security services for over 60 years has now been told to a largely sceptical world. The Sinhala government propaganda machine has bought the support of British MPs with all expenses paid junkets to Sri Lanka to sing the praises of the tyrannical government with Tamil blood on its hands and to traduce the claims of the Tamils for self-government as international terrorism.
So it was that the world conspired by its silence at the mass genocide of the Tamils and looked askance when the elderly Tamils and their children were mown down by artillery shells, cluster bombs and chemical weapons. The leadership of the Tamil resistance was encouraged to surrender carrying white flags to the Sri Lankan army and was shot down in cold blood while doing so.
Over 100,00 Tamils killed in a racist and genocidal war in the Vanni. The UK Times provided satellite photographs of the evidence of trenches and mounds where more than 20,000 Tamils were killed and buried in the final days of the war last year. Some even say that as much as 48,000 Tamils were killed by the Sinhala armed forces in the last three days of the war. Reliable eye witness accounts have reported that weak, infirm and injured Tamil people were buried half alive in trenches and shot by the Sri Lanka army. There was deliberate and mass starvation and destruction of the few hospitals left standing to cater to the people.
The souls of these thousands of innocent Tamil victims seek justice and closure and we, the survivors, have to keep their avenging cries in the forefront of our moral crusade and political campaign to bring the war criminals Rajapakse and his blood-letting gang to justice.
We will remember all Tamil victims on this solemn occasion , even the Black July victims
July 1983 was a paradigm shift in terror. Thirteen soldiers were killed by the LTTE. Anti-Tamil riots ensued and lasted for ten days with property being destroyed and up to 3,000 people being killed and 200,000 displaced.
From President Jayewardene’s residence, shops could be seen going up in flames but no curfew was called and police disappeared from the streets. Marauding gangs armed with axes and cans of petrol went around Colombo with electoral rolls identifying Tamil homes and businesses. The inhabitants were doused in petrol and set alight.
A Norwegian woman tourist recalled seeing a mob setting fire to a bus with about 20 Tamils inside it. Those who climbed out the windows were pushed back in and the doors were sealed while they burned alive, screaming horribly. In another incident, a mob chopped two Tamil girls aged 18 and 11 with knives; the younger girl was beheaded with an axe, the older one raped by 20 men and then doused in petrol and burned alive in front of joyful Sinhalese crowds
