Finding the Disappeared

On August 30, Amnesty International and other human rights groups around the world will observe the International Day of the Disappeared.  We’ll be pressing governments to disclose the status of  the disappeared and to prosecute those responsible for enforced disappearances.  Here’s how you can join us:

  • Ask the government of Chad to reveal the whereabouts of opposition leader Dr. Ibni O.M. Saleh, abducted from his home by the security forces on Feb. 3, 2006.
  • In China, help us determine the fate of the human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who was detained by the authorities in Feb. 2009 and has subsequently disappeared.
  • Demand that the government in Nepal disclose the location of Sanjiv Kumar Karna, who was picnicking with friends when he was arrested by the security forces on Oct. 8, 2003.
  • Hold the government of North Korea to account for the 50,000 detainees held in Yodok prison camp, most without charge or trial or any access to relatives.
  • In Sri Lanka, demand that the government investigate the fate of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, who went missing shortly after leaving work on Jan. 24, 2010.

These people haven’t really “disappeared” – their governments know what happened to them.  The governments just don’t want to tell the rest of us, including their families.  And every day that goes by, their families continue to suffer the agony of not knowing the fate of their loved ones.  Help us end the suffering of their families and get justice for the disappeared.  Write today!

  1. 13000 Baloch have been disappeared by Pakistan since 2001 and more then 200 were killed under custody since June Last year. The disappearances and extra-judicial killings still continue unabated in Balochistan. Amnesty should press Pakistan to surface the disappeared Baloch and bring the culprits (Pakistani Army and Para Military) to the international criminal court

  2. Dear Editors …

Sittingnut's still disappearing the disappeared… while disappearing himself from open view.

    Can't we do something ??

Why this "Like" / "Dislike" democracy drill … when it's misused to disappear democracy herself ??

AI – I firmly believe that you should have a mass gathering in Colombo where we could get many signatures and handover to the President with Copies to UN demanding justice for Pradeep E. It has been way too long since he has dissapeared and trsut me, not a fly could pass by without the President of Sri Lanka knowing if he really wants to. the President should be put under pressure by all means and no other cause the others are basically useless…

  6. I wholeheartedly support AI's call for the Sri Lankan government to expedite Prageeth's disappearance investigation. Their tardiness is simply disgraceful and the heartache for his family and those of the other disappeared people must be unimaginably awful.

Another allegedly disappeared person, a human rights activist called Pattani Razeek has now been found, murdered. And even more surprisingly (for Sri Lanka), the people responsible for his murder have been arrested.

".. Razeek’s case is a rare instance where the body of a disappeared person has been found, based on information given by arrested suspects. The arrest of key suspects is itself a rare occurrence in the thousands of disappearance cases in Sri Lanka. It is even more unusual that people connected to a Minister in the ruling regime would be arrested for a serious crime." http://www.srilankabrief.org/2011/08/who-killed-r

In February 2010, AI (correctly) drew attention to Razeek's disappearance and gave valuable publicity to this case.

I hope people will see it and be moved to join with Amnesty International to help the cause.

    Day of the Disappeared

    I’m demanding today

    that you uncover their fate.

    Citizens are disappearing;

    you’re covering up.

    Unscrupulous regimes

    hiding their locations and

    secreting them away

    to unknown prison camps.

    These people are speaking

    and showing the truth

    of governments who rule

    with silencing oppression.

    Human rights are

    being trod on, people

    live in distress, of the

    harsh repercussions

    for justifiable demands.

    People worldwide

    deserve honorable

    treatment. Living

    lives of freedom

    from fear and disappearing.

    Your abduction of those

    who show courage to

    oppose, will soon be halted;

    your power eliminated.

    The world is watching.

    We won’t forget their faces.

    Stories of their lives

    are being told even here.

    We won’t stop until

    there’s liberty for all.

It’s the least we can do for

    our brothers and sisters.

    So now we are campaigning

    to find out the truth,

    the Day of the Disappeared

    is now in effect.

    Light shown on your villainy

    will soon reveal their site.

    The world is watching.

    We won’t forget their faces.

  16. Colombo (AsiaNews) – "Help us to find our children, without looking at our ethnicity or religion." This is the appeal launched by Tamil mothers, yesterday, on the occasion of World Day of the disappeared. A collective of various civil society groups, mostly Christians, has organized a commemoration in Colombo, to demand the government of Sri Lanka investigate and reveal the truth about the disappearance of the children of these women, during the long years of ethnic conflict. http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Tamil-Mothers:-Hel

According to a UN study, Sri Lanka is the second country with the highest number of disappeared in the world, with about 12 thousand missing persons. In over 30 years, during the ethnic conflict that has bloodied the island, both the state and Tamil rebels were responsible for the large number of missing.

“The reactions to the ‘Grease Yaka/Mystery Man’ by communities and the State have largely led to increased violence and tension. Vigilance groups have assaulted suspects, damaged property and taken lives. The armed forces have responded with lethal force against protesting mobs, but also have beaten scared villagers and threatened community leaders in their attempts to quell fears – with quite the opposite effect.”

A group of Army soldiers have come to the rescue of a Grease Devil who was being attacked by villagers in Pubudupura in Anuradhapura when he was caught trying to abuse a woman in the village.

A man clad in black had knocked on the door of the residence in Pubudupura 3rd stage where the woman was living around 8.30 p.m. The house owner and villagers have assaulted him and tied the person to a tree.

The group of Army personnel who had arrived at the spot a few minutes later in a white van without a number plate had asked that the person be handed over to either the Army or the police as he was an Army soldier.

  28. Mahinda Rajapakse is the leader of a pack of rogues that committed the world’s worst war crimes of the century. The genocide of 40000 Tamils civilians in May 2009 in Mullivaikal was the culmination of the war crimes that destroyed the homeland of the Tamils in Vanni and disappeared nearly 146000 Tamils in total. The war also spawned 89000 Tamil widows and more than 125000 disabled persons. All these vicious acts were meticulously planned and the war was a ‘war without witnesses’ as described by the world media. The perpetrators of the conflict termed ‘blood bath on the beeches’ of Mullivaikal went unpunished by the UN and other watchdogs of the world. The inaction of the world to track down these war criminals is the dilemma that shook the world. With the impunity provided by such inaction the world had given licence to the Mahinda Rajapkse (MR) and his brothers to terrorise the Tamil Ethnic minorities and subjugate them. http://www.tamilcanadian.com/article/6155

  32. The many countries, who wished for a fair settlement to the many decades old ethnic strife in Sri Lanka, have finally shown some impatience over the turn of events. The utter disregard by the Sri Lankan regime over its justification in keeping its Tamil minority shackled; worse murdered, has become quite transparent in recent times. This truth though was told over decades by the Tamils, the not so believers of the international community, has finally been hit hard with the gruesome outcome of the genocidal war. The truth; but nothing but the truth – all in filmed first hand witness accounts and logistics has given the world an urgency to act. http://www.tamilcanadian.com/article/6158

The death or better put, the sacrifice of nearly 40,000 Tamil lives should put a stop to this blindness, and bring an era of mutual understanding with respect and equality. Without

Justice, there cannot be reconciliation or power sharing – no lessons will be learnt; but furthering the racial superiority with unaccountable evil intentions.

During his tenure as the minister in charge of human rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe’s main task has been to protect human rights violators in the police, military and paramilitaries while pretending to the diplomatic community that he is protecting human rights.

His intervention to protect STF men who killed five university students in Trincomalee in January 2006 is the perfect example of Minister Samarasinghe’s double game.

The man once again is trying to hoodwink the international community in Geneva as the head of government delegation to UNHRC sessions that begin on 12 September.

It is imperative that the UN Human Rights system act as a deterrent to breaches of international human rights laws, and war crimes, and deterrence can only take place where there is consistency in the application of the law, and proper investigation and prosecution of it. Mme. President, the Human Rights Council must act swiftly to bring about justice in Sri Lanka. The first step to that long process is to adopt the recommendations of the Secretary Generals Panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka.

The United States today called for paramilitary activity in the North to be controlled and for Tamil Policemen to be deployed to the North. The US Assistant Secretary of State Robert O. Blake also expressed his concern about Human Rights in the country. “I am concerned about human rights. I discussed with relevant officials the importance of disarming paramilitary groups, on which progress is being made. It is important to deploy Tamil policeman in the north so the military no longer needs to perform these functions,” he said. “Paramilitary groups are not allowed to carry weapons in public. While I was in Jaffna I myself, experienced the power of the EPDP who was able to prevent me from meeting with some university students,” he said.

2009 Tamil Genocide, over 40,000 killed within a month

Sri Lanka aims to get more time to complete genocide
    [TamilNet, Wednesday, 14 September 2011, 16:46 GMT]
The primary aim of Sri Lanka in the UN human rights council is to buy some more time to complete its genocide of Eezham Tamils through structural means and militarisation so that the question of war crimes would eventually lose its importance and would become acceptable means of contemporary world polity. The more time is given to a virtually Sinhala military to occupy the country of Eezham Tamils with impunity, the more the world will be contributing to a dangerous paradigm.

  66. US Urged to Deny Sri Lanka President Entry http://www.einnews.com/pr-news/537408-us-urged-to

/EINPresswire.com/ Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) citing § 212(a)(3)(E)(ii) and § 212(a)(3)(E)(iii) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act appealed to the United States Government to not to allow Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse to visit the United States for committing torture, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against the Tamil people.

The appeal also cites an earlier incident in 1987, when United States denied entry to Kurt Waldheim to attend the United Nations on the ground that he participated in Nazi sponsored persecution. Waldheim, who was elected president of Austria in 1986, had staunchly denied any wrong doing.

This appeal was made in a letter to US Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano by TGTE's Minister for the Investigation of Genocide, War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity DeLuxon Morris.

That letter highlighted the details of the United Nations Panel report which documented abuses by the Sri Lanka Security forces, under the command of President Mahinda Rajapakse. UN Report alleged that around 40,000 people and women were sexually assaulted and more than140,000 people are unaccounted for. It further alleged that these abuses constitutes War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide.

  70. US cables show how international silence enabled Sri Lanka’s genocide
    [TamilNet, Thursday, 22 September 2011, 03:55 GMT]
In March 2009 Sri Lanka had come to the attention of the UN’s Special Adviser for the Prevention of Genocide, Francis Deng, but despite his disquiet he did not take further steps as Sri Lanka had assured him the United States and India supported its military campaign, according to a leaked US cable. The account of the meeting on March 16, 2009 between Mr. Deng and the US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, as well as other US cables, shows how international inaction and silence, rather than ignorance, made it possible for Sri Lanka to continue and escalate its mass killings of Tamil civilians. http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=79&art

  82. Grease Devils and Police and Army attacks on civilians in Mannar and Vavuniya http://groundviews.org/2011/10/02/grease-devils-a

At around 2 am on 21st August, two officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) came to the cell and called out two persons including the seminarian. The witness states that the officers appeared to be drunk. Both men were pushed in to the interrogation room and fell to the floor. There were five officers, two in police uniform and others in civilian clothing.

One victim states that: “the officers dragged me up and asked ‘will you hit the police’ when I tried to tell them that I did not hit the police, they asked me to shut up. When the officers began to hit me, I tried to shield my face with my hand. The officer ordered me to put my hand down and hit me with his fist, on my forehead, cheeks, chin and my ears. When he hit my ears I felt an electric shock pass through my body. I saw the seminarian being beaten by other officers in the same room. An officer hit me on the head with a baton. When I fell down, they trampled me and continued to beat me. They put me on a table and two officers held my hands and another beat the soles of my feet and my head with a baton. They pushed me on the floor and trampled and kicked my head. They questioned me about a robbery that took place in the village over three years ago. I said that I did not know anything about the robbery. When I tried to stand up, an officer kicked me in the head and I fell backward. Another officer grabbed me and slammed me against the wall. While I was being tortured, another senior officer in uniform entered the room. I thought that he was the OIC and begged him to release me. The officer picked up a baton and hit me on the head.”

  89. The genocidal State of Sri Lanka takes every possible action to make life miserable, intimidated and subjugated so that more Eezham Tamils would leave and the genocide would be complete. Sri Lankan government also actually doesn’t want the diaspora to return, as could be seen by its new regulations on visa requirements, land registration etc. http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&art

Whether one shows legal land deeds of heredity or not, to establish the private ownership of land in the country of Eezham Tamils, the occupying Sri Lanka Army would place a signboard that the land is out of reach. Thereafter, if the owner of the land is not prepared to bribe the occupying Army, the land will be given to anyone who collaborates with the occupying Army. This is the reality about fertile cultivation lands especially in Vanni, since genocidal Sri Lanka has embarked upon ‘re-registering’ lands in the country of Eezham Tamils under a programme ‘Bim Saviya’ of Sinhala nomenclature. The explicit land-related structural genocide has made even a Rajapaksa-supporting Tamil politician like Anandasangaree to become more vociferous than the TNA in calling for a non-cooperation movement of Tamils. http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=79&art
